Khabr al-wāḥid

Definition of khabr al-wāḥid: that which does not meet the conditions of tawātur, as set out above.  

Khabr al-wāḥid has the possibility of doubt in the narrations, according to the jamhūr (majority).[1]

Types of khabr al-wāḥid

Khabr al-wāḥid can be categorised into three sub-categories based upon the number of narrators:

  1. Gharīb;
  2. Azīz; and
  3. Mashḥūr .

[1] However according to Sam’āni, al-Āmadī, Ibn Ṣalāḥ, Ibn Taymiyyah, Bilqīnī, Ibn Ḥajar, Suyūṭī and others, Akhbār al-āḥād (plural of khabr al-wāḥid) gives benefit to ‘ilm al-naẓari (evidentiary or convincing knowledge).
