Mu’talif and mukhtalif

If the names of the narrators are the same in terms of writing, but different in terms of the dots[1] then this is termed mu’talif[2] and mukhtalif.[3]


[1] Nuṭq in Arabic, where letters have dots. 

[2] Meaning similar

[3] For example سلّام (Sallām) and سلام (Salām) are both written the same in Arabic, however one has tashdīd and the other doesn’t. Likewise عَقيل(Aqīl) and عُقيل (‘Uqayl) are written the same in Arabic, however the diacritical marks change the pronunciation of the words.
