If the narrator is older in age and an older generation,[1] or greater in ability or is greater than the one he is receiving the narration from then this is termed riwāyāt al-akābir `an al-aṣāghir.
From this comes the narrations of fathers from their sons, ṣaḥābah from tābi’īn and teachers from their students.
