Nahw is the soul of Arabic and, I’rab is the soul of Nahw
Ponder upon the following example and how its meaning changes with the changing of its harakat (vowels).
أحمد أكرم الناس
Example 1
أحمدُ أكرمُ الناسِ
Ahmad is the most honorable of people
– أحمد: مبتدأ مرفوع
– أكرمُ: خبر مرفوع .
– الناسِ: مضافٌ إليه مجرور.
Example 2
أحمدُ أكرمَ الناسَ
Ahmad honored the people
– أحمدُ: مبتدأ مرفوع
– أكرمَ : فعل ماضٍ مبني على الفتح، والفاعل ضمير مستتر.
– الناسَ: مفعول به منصوب.
– وجملة ( أكرمَ الناسَ) خبر.
Example 3
أحمُدُ أكرمَ الناسِ
I praised the most honorable of the people
– أحمُدُ: فعل مضارع مرفوع، والفاعل ضمير مستتر تقديره أنا.
– أكرمَ: مفعول به منصوب.
– الناسِ: مضافٌ إليه مجرور.
Example 4
أحمدُ, أكرمِ الناس
Ahmad, honor the people!
– أحمدُ: منادى مفرد علم مبني على الضم.
– أكرمِ: فعل أمر مبني على السكون، وحرّك بالكسر منع من ذلك التقاء الساكنين، والفاعل ضمير مستتر تقديره أنت.
– الناسَ: مفعول به منصوب.
Example 5
أحمدَ أكرمَ الناسُ
The people honored Ahmad
– أحمدَ: مفعول به مقدّم منصوب.
– أكرمَ: فعل ماضٍ مبني على الفتح.
– الناسُ: فاعلٌ مرفوع.
Example 6
أحَمِدَ أكرمُ الناسِ؟
Did he praise the most honorable of the people?
– الهمزة للاستفهام.
– حمدَ: فعلٌ ماضٍ.
– أكرمُ: فاعل مرفوع.
– الناس: مفعول به منصوب.
Example 7
أحُمِدَ أكرمُ الناسِ؟
Was the most honorable of the people praised?
– الهمزة للاستفهام.
– حُمِدَ: فعل ماضٍ مبني للمجهول.
– أكرمُ: نائب فاعل مرفوع.
– الناسِ: مضاف إليه مجرور.
There are many other possibilities of different sentences which can be structured using the same words as above, but with different i’rab. However the preceding seven examples are sufficient to show that it is i’rab which transforms the meaning of a sentence.
