Types of water

Ruling on types of water

One may do wudhu with;

  1. Rain water
  2. Water from valleys
  3. Spring water
  4. Well water
  5. Sea water

If something pure is mixed with these types of water such that only one of its qualities change, then this is permissible to use for wudhu.

It is not permissible to do wudhu with water which has been;

  1. Cooked
  2. Squeezed out from a tree or fruit
  3. Mixed with something which is impermissible for wudhu, such that it is more than the pure water. E.g. if 2 ratl[1]of used water (impermissible) is mixed with 1 ratl of rain water

It is not permissible to do wudhu with still water which has najas (impurity) in it, unless it measures 10 by 10 (ikhtilaaf to the exact amount) i.e. it is very large, and there are no traces of najasa (impurities). In this case it will be considered to be like flowing water. Traces of najasa can be identified through, taste, colour or smell.

The death of animals which have no flowing blood e.g. fly, wasp, scorpion, fish or frog does not make the water impure.

Maa Musta’mal (used water) ie. water which is used to get closer to Allah (e.g. doing wudhu to read Quran), or water which has already been used to remove impurities, cannot be used for wudhu. Maa Musta’mal is pure but not purifying.

Every tanned leather is pure except for the leather of pigs or humans.

The hair of humans and the dead, as well as their bones are pure.
