الأربعون النووية
Imām al-Nawawī's collection of forty-two foundational ḥadīth, traditionally studied as a survey of the religion.
Imām al-Nawawī (d. 676 AH) selected these ḥadīth for their breadth: between them, he held, they cover the religion. The collection is short enough to memorise and rich enough to study for a lifetime — a combination that has made it a fixture of the curriculum for nearly eight centuries.
These notes follow the standard ordering. Each lesson is one ḥadīth: the Arabic text and a faithful translation, a brief note on the chain and the source, and a short commentary drawn from the classical sharḥs of the Forty.
